Guide: Under the background of "carbon neutrality", the sustainable development of plastics has become a hot spot in the industry, and bio-based materials have attracted much attention because of their recyclable characteristics.

[ Packaging and Printing Industry Network Industry Trends ] Under the background of "carbon neutrality", the sustainable development of plastics has become a hot spot in the industry, and bio-based materials have attracted much attention because of their recyclable characteristics. Bio-based plastics refer to plastics whose processing raw materials come from renewable resources. Its raw materials come from natural renewable carbon sources, which can be degraded by microorganisms on the basis of certain fermentation and degradation conditions, such as cellulose fiber, polylactic acid (PLA ), polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA), polybutylene succinate (PBS), etc. Starch-based plastics, PLA, PHA, and PBS are the four main types of biodegradable plastics with the most research and the largest market scale in the current biodegradable plastics market, and are widely used.

  Bio-based perfume and cosmetic packaging

Luxury goods group LVMH has announced that its beauty division (LVMH Beauty) will partner with Dow to use recycled and bio-based plastics in its perfume and cosmetics packaging.

According to reports, Dow's Sarin™ resin is made from chemically recycled bio-based and waste plastic raw materials, and its ionomers can be used in the production of plastics. Since the resin uses bio-based materials such as used cooking oil as a raw material, waste residue or by-products generated during the production process can be reduced, thereby preventing excessive consumption of land resources and competition with the food chain.

Sarin™ ionomer will be used to make perfume bottle caps and cosmetic cream jars. Dow said that these materials can not only maintain the high-level aesthetics of previous packaging designs, but also help reduce the carbon footprint of LVMH group.

  PHA+PLA mixed bio-based powder box

Korean makeup brand CJ Olive Young (CJ Olive Young) recently launched a 100% bio-based packaging solution. According to reports, the brand's makeup series WAKEMAKE Moisture Velvet Matte Concealer Cushion Cushion is made of bio-based packaging made of a mixture of PHA and PLA, and it was launched in South Korea on December 21.

CJ Biomaterials, a biomaterials company under South Korean food conglomerate CJ CheilJedang, provided packaging solutions. CJ Biomaterials, which specializes in the production of PHA, said that by mixing PHA with PLA, it can enhance PLA's mechanical properties such as toughness and ductility, thereby improving impact resistance. This packaging solution replaces the original ABS. ABS is a non-degradable plastic commonly used in cosmetic packaging.

  Bagasse hot and cold lids

Bagasse, also known as sugarcane pulp, is a fibrous material left over from the harvesting of sugarcane. It has multiple uses and is a sustainable alternative to traditional plastic packaging . BioPak introduces these hot and cold drink lids made from bagasse.

These lids are certified to Australian Standards (AS4738/AS5810), are home and industrially compostable, are made from plant-based renewable resources and are PFAS-free. The weight and thickness of the cup cover have been verified by multiple tests, and with the unique buckle, the cup cover can be fixed on the cup. While many paper-based products are also compostable, bagasse has the advantage that growing sugarcane doesn't have the same environmental impact as papermaking does from trees.

  Home Degradable Coffee Capsules

Coles Group's 100% bio-based coffee capsules are made from natural ingredients produced by microbial fermentation of vegetable oils and their fatty acids. All components of the capsules are certified compostable at home. The capsule body is made from a vegetable oil derivative. The lid is bio-based, compostable, oxygen-resistant and tear-resistant.
