Lego has moved most of its packaging lines from plastic bags to paper bags.

The Danish-headquartered Lego Group has flipped more than half of its packaging lines from single-use plastic bags to paper packaging as part of its ongoing push for sustainable packaging. 56% of its Lego brick packaging lines have replaced single-use plastic bags with paper-plastic bags.
The company started replacing single-use plastics with a new inner bag made from paper from well-managed forests (FSC C117818), recycled materials and other controlled sources for the bricks in the box, in 2022.

At present, five of the group's factories are using paper bags, and it is claimed that the implementation in its factories in China and Vietnam has been basically completed. The facilities in the Czech Republic and Hungary are planned to be fully deployed in 2026, and the deployment in Mexico is scheduled for 2027.

The company reports that 93 percent of its total packaging is made up of paper, cardboard, or other paper-based materials by weight.

Lego also cited its own research, showing that 81 percent of consumers are concerned about recycling and 80 percent are focused on reducing waste, indicating that the packaging changes align with the preferences of younger consumers. The group plans to continue adjusting and improving its paper-based packaging lines to increase their speed of operation, ultimately surpassing the output of traditional plastic machinery.

For the packaging industry, this is a landmark commitment, with 55 founding organisations recently agreeing to sign up to the upcoming UK Packaging Agreement, which will launch in April 2026. The new agreement, which is being launched by WRAP in partnership with PackUK and with the support of the UK government, builds on the Plastic Packaging Agreement and will scope to all packaging materials, with a commitment to transform industry practice in design, re-use, recycling and data integration.
